Stablehand: Hexartus

This is a concept I drew yesterday for Hexartus, the most familiar genus of dragon found in the Stablehand universe—more commonly known simply as the hexart. Hexarts are very unusual among animals not only for their crazy number of limbs (hexa- six + artus limb), but also for their incredible power of metamorphosis. Although all of them begin life looking somewhat like the juvenile above, at a certain point many individuals undergo a drastic transformation that leaves them looking wildly different as adults. The process is not well understood, but in many cases, an individual's adult form tends to relate in some way to its specific experiences and other organisms it encounters. An adult hexart may end up looking like a blue jay, a lion, or theoretically even an oak tree in bizarre enough circumstances. Some have even taken on adult forms that resemble humans, although for some reason none have been found that have a perfect resemblance, and most of that sort have retained some obvious indicator of hexart-ness such as scales or a tail. It also remains to be seen whether any of them can actually learn to speak human language.

Hexarts are not shape-shifters. They can only transform once, and once they do so, there is more or less no going back. To a culture that grew up with their existence, they would probably be a symbol of greatest commitment and selflessness, as well as a convenient subject for a cautionary tale when needed. They would also likely be a good metaphor for a criminal that dives into the shadows and tries to hide behind limitation statutes and other protections to escape punishment.

Red, the dragon I posted a picture of earlier, is a hexart. That should give you a small taste of what the species is capable of.

An announcement for art, culture, and fans everywhere

Recently I've started taking an unusually great interest in the subject of intellectual property, its ups, its downs, and its abuses (on both sides). And after listening to a couple talks by a man named Lawrence Lessig, I've finally started to decide on what my stance is.

People want to remix, repackage, and transform. It's an outlet for their skills, a way to express themselves, and just something to do when they don't feel like making more "serious" and "original" works. There's something about it that feels more productive than simply mindlessly consuming things, and sometimes a combination brings out new nuances you never would have noticed in the original works if they hadn't been combined. Some copyright holders might not like it, but it's arguably a major part of our culture at this point, to the point that sometimes it just plain makes them look bad when they try to crush it. Some people are literally going and claiming they own the rights to public domain music and even BIRD SONG (not kidding!) just so they can use copyright to gain power over other people. Things are getting disgusting, and if we don't do something about this, we might be in for a day when nobody makes any new works and we just pass around the same 125-year-old books and albums, or it's at least a civil wrong for anybody who isn't part of one of the three big companies that end up purchasing everybody's rights to create a new work except maybe under extremely strict specifications put out by the big guys. A certain newspaper has actually already tried to restrict the use of the letter "T" (no, really, I'm not even joking).

So what can we do?

One option is to start over. If we can't create a fan culture around works from "the big guys", we need to make a new body of works surrounded by less nastiness, less absurdity, and fewer federal agents, a body which anyone can freely create new works from. That body already partially exists, but it's still very small and fragmented compared to all the locked-up strictly commercial stuff out there. It needs some livening up.

And that is why I'm going to licence Stablehand under the CC-BY-NC-SA CC-BY-SA. If you are an artist who enjoys synthesis, adaptation, and—dare I say it—freedom, I encourage you to use a CC licence as well.

Allow me to introduce you to Red.

She's the main character's mount, and happens to be a dragon that looks almost exactly like a gryphon. Nothing weird about that, nope.

New: Featured Quote from the Nonsense Dream Team

As you might or might not have noticed, I've added a section to the bottom of the blog that shows a periodic featured quote. As you might also have noticed, this featured quote is just a little more bizarre than anybody else's featured quotes. Why? Because it comes from the combined wisdom of Cleverbot, Answers.com, and Bad Translator.

Just imagine a story entirely based around this stuff.

Seriously. I'm going to make it happen.

Layout update!

I finally got around to making that final background graphic, and I'm not even sure if I like it. But whatever. It's there now. The layout is complete. Hurrah!

As of now, Sangkara is best viewed at a width of 1280 pixels or more, though this new layout will still scale down to 1024 pixels decently. I will try to fix it later so the graphic doesn't get as squashed, but for now I think it's fine.

Levels of Chayavana Abstraction

Oh lord. How long has it been since I actually posted something related to the Tyrian project here? x_x

This was a little concept drawing for Tyrian that would take a lot longer to explain fully than I really want to right now. Basically all you need to know is that there are these things called Chayavana, and they're sort of like gods or something in that they have their own realm but they can manifest into the tangible world. They have several levels of abstraction, and generally become stronger defensively but weaker offensively as they go upward. However, with a little practice, they can gain many more abilities as they become more abstract (such as the birdy here going from standard wings to feather fingers), and their lifespan and overall endurance greatly increases as well as they gain the ability to rise to higher levels.

I imagine it being easy for Chayavana to switch between abstraction levels once they have the ability to, but hard for them to initially learn how to abstract themselves to a higher level. I also see it as something that many who know about the process (which are relatively few really) are reluctant to do because they don't like the idea of becoming a shadow of themselves.

That will probably mean little to nothing to you right now, but it will make more sense when the story actually gets somewhere. Just enjoy the pretty picture and trust me on this one. XD
