SH Guidebook: Mystery Beings

The world of Stablehand may have many unusual fauna in it, but most of the time, people don't even think anything of them, not knowing a world without them. Dragons, griffins, unicorns, bizarre-looking cats... nah, nothing weird about those.

However, there are a few beings that do surprise and shock people when they appear. A lot. Nobody knows where they come from, what they're made of, what their intentions are, or really much of anything else about them, and the few times they have appeared, very few of them have stayed around long enough to be fully examined by science. Although many of them have left traces such as tracks or hairs that seem to be consistent across accounts, a lot of people simply believe they don't exist. Others fear them as phantoms and demons, and yet others desperately want to see one but go years without actually doing so.

Instigator

Instigators are vaguely crocodilian-looking beings that seem to delight in stirring people up.

Nebuliser

Nebulisers are vaguely cat-like beings that are often very secretive. When approached, they seem to be able to transform their bodies into a thick haze for indefinite periods of time, or to diffuse themselves entirely into thin air.

Synergiser

Synergisers are vaguely whale-like beings that seem to just drift through the water without any real purpose or destination, watching their surroundings curiously. They also seem to be able to float in the air very similarly to the way they swim, though nobody knows how, and to see things from great distances.

Observer

Observers are vaguely canine-looking beings with patagia along their sides that, a lot like Synergisers, tend to wander around watching what others are doing. However, unlike Synergisers, they tend to move fairly close to their target of observation as if they are genuinely interested in that particular person's activities, and sometimes to follow said person for many consecutive days. Nonetheless, they seem to be very shy and run away quickly if something actually tries to approach them, often never to return.

Observers also seem to have a bipedal form in which they're somewhat bolder and much stronger, and in this form they tend to invade more than observe, often breaking things open to see what's inside and devouring them or ripping them apart just because. A few people have reported that an Observer tried to "enslave" them and threatened to harm them if they did not follow its orders, but most people do not believe this is possible.

Conductor

Conductors are vaguely dragon-like beings with flexible tails coved in spots, somewhat like a banana slug. Each has a baton it almost always carries, and .

Ostentator

Ostentators are vaguely llama-like beings that always sport great, poofy coats.

Insulator

Insulators are vaguely ferret-like beings that .

Postulator

Postulators are vaguely bat-like beings that .

Seuwayote

Seuwayotes are vaguely coyote-like beings that .

Cloud Leijonœrn

Cloud leijonœrns are vaguely leijonœrn- (griffin-) like beings that appear to be mostly made out of water vapour. Like clouds, they seem to move by shifting all the matter in their bodies like a fluid, and .

Carp Concurrent

Carp concurrent are beings superficially a lot like ordinary carp that for some reason tend to form pairs or trios and rotate around in circles endlessly.

Hlardraho

Hlardraho are rather hexart-like beings, with three main differences: a number of very sharp spines protrude from their bodies, they don't seem to undergo metamorphosis, and they appear to somehow be able to spout piercing streams of fire from their mouths. As they can sometimes be very dangerous and destructive, boring vast and amazingly deep chasms in the ground with a single fire-dart, there is probably more definitive evidence of their existence around than of any other mystery being.
